Abstract: This project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC-UKRI) explores humanitarian visas (HVs) in Brazil, focusing on their use in South-South migration corridors, a topic underrepresented in current research. Brazil has granted HVs to Haitians, Syrians, Afghans, and Ukrainians since 2012, yet the policies remain poorly defined and inconsistently applied. The study aims to understand how Brazilian stakeholders—including government, NGOs, and migrant-led organisations—perceive and evaluate HV policies, and what lessons can be drawn for other countries.

Key objectives include defining HVs from a Brazilian perspective; mapping and engaging stakeholders; building networks of researchers and co-developing future research and policy recommendations. The expected benefits are an improved understanding and definition of HVs in Brazil; greater visibility for migrant voices in shaping humanitarian responses and policy insights.
